Kanshi Ram (March 15, 1934 – October 9, 2006) also known as Bahujan Nayak Kanshiram, Indian politician and Social Activist of Dalit Raidasia, Sikh background from Ropar district, Punjab, founded the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) to give political power to the marginalized section of the society.
Kanshi Ram main primary source of inspiration was "Annihilation of Castes" Dr. Ambedkar's writing
Kanshi Ram was a great organizer, he created a political conscience among the educated backward caste and Dalit employees. Kanshi Ram conducted several experiments of social action countrywide successfully. The programmes created sufficient awareness in the Bahujan Samaj about their socio - political, economic and cultural status. “Political power is the key to all social progress” he felt absolutely essential for the people of all oppressed and exploited communities to prepare themselves for agitational and political action.
According to him, "not that our people were not struggling. They were struggling, but not for themselves. They were not struggling for their own cause. They were and are struggling for somebody else as stooges.”…Chamcha Age, the era of stooges,.
Manyawar consistently led his movement for almost 38 yrs from 1965-2003 till his illness.
In 1978 he formed the, BAMCEF-Backward(SC/ST & OBC) and Minority Community Employees Federation. The BAMCEF was purely non political,Non Religious & Non Agitional organisation.
Later on he formed another Social organisation known as DS4.
In 1984 he founded the Bahujan Samaj Party.
On October 9, 2006, he died of a severe heart attack in New Delhi. Kanshi Ram, who suffered from multiple ailments such as stroke, diabetes and hypertension, was virtually bed-ridden for more than two years.
Kanshiram wrote two books
